Professor of Pharmaceutical Biology at the Department of Biomedical, Surgical and Dental Sciences, Faculty of Medicine, University of Milan. He has been studying bioactive phytochemicals, nutraceuticals, functional foods, phytonutrients, phytotherapeutics, botanicals and essential oils relevant for human and animal nutrition and health, focusing on their functional role in planta as well as on their preclinical (in vitro/in vivo) and in human biological/pharmacological activities. He has been investigating the effects of elicitors on plant secondary metabolism, as an approach to obtain phytochemical-enriched plant foods and medicinal herbs. He has been studying the health-promoting effects of the traditional Mediterranean diet as well as the ethnopharmacology of herbal remedies and traditional healing systems.
